Can beeswax honeycomb be used as a sculpture material?
This is a slew of questions about a relief painting I'm working on. Any input is greatly appreciated!
Is it possible to use pre-fab beeswax honeycomb as a final sculpture medium?
Can beeswax honeycomb (8x16" squares) be cut into human silhouette shapes?
What are some methods of adhering/gluing/attaching beeswax honeycomb to a wood panel?
Does beeswax honeycomb adhere to oil or acrylic paint? Does it matter which paint I use?
What kind of sculpting wax (preferably pre-dyed black) could I use to build features/details upon the beeswax honeycomb silhouette?
What kind of glue/adhesive can be used to attach metal pins to the beeswax honeycomb?
Is there a sealant I can use on the honeycomb?
I know this sounds jumbled; the project is too complicated to explain here. Thank you so much for any input you have!
Anything can be used as a sculpture medium.
So that includes honeycombs. Though I would use ones which have the honey removed, otherwise it will get really messy.
I don't see why you couldn't cut silhouette shapes out of it. I would first try it out whether a hot or a cold but sharp knife gives the best results. You may also want to stick them in the freezer before you try to cut. Beeswax is fairly soft and sticky, so colder and harder it probably cuts better.
Hot wax sticks to most things. So you should be able to use beeswax to stick beeswax onto a wood panel. If the beeswax shape is heavy it probably would help if you would either have a rough wood surface or make the wood surface rough (e.g. you could pound a lot a lot of small short nails into the contact surface of the wood) for improved strength.
Generally microcrystalline wax is best for sculpting. I don't know if it comes in black, but a dark brown is one of the most common kinds anyway.
